The piston accumulator is primarily a high-quality cylinder tube with the internal surface machined to superfine grade. An internally mounted piston that moves freely along the tube length separates the gas and fluid chambers. The gas section is pre-charged with inert gas (mostly nitrogen).
The fluid under pressure enters into the accumulator through the fluid port and compresses the inert gas stored in the other side. When the line pressure drops, the compressed gas expands and forces the stored fluid back into the circuit.
