Return-line filters are designed for tank-top mounting or inline mounting, the most preferred being tank-top type.

As one of the last links in a hydraulic circuit, they retain solid contamination particles before these get into the tank. All contamination particles which got generated in the system are filtered out. This means, that, the operating fluid returning from the system flow is cleaned and filtered, before being returned to the reservoir.

The most commonly used filter is the tank-top filter, wherein the filter head and cover are mounted onto the reservoir, while the filter housing with the element, is in the reservoir, this offers a space-saving solution for OEM in particular construction, earth-moving equipment and agricultural industry (tractors, ploughs, sprayers, harvesters, dryers, etc.), that use return line filter for its smooth operations

For systems operating round the clock, the filter housing must be preferably of the change-over type to ensure that the system does not need to be switched off for filter maintenance.

Return line filters can be sensitive to flow surges, which could happen through the simultaneous operation of multiple valves or from rapid flow discharge from cylinders. This makes it necessary to ensure that return-line filters are sized for the maximum flow of the hydraulic system (max l/min).
